What is an ’a-kasse’?

In Denmark, unemployment insurance (or ‘dagpenge’) is not handled by a government agency, but instead by a private organisation called an ‘a-kasse’. Although there are 21 different a-kasser, all rules and rates of payment are dictated by law and therefore the same everywhere.

Apart from paying out dagpenge, an a-kasse also helps its members with career guidance.

Why choose MA?

Most a-kasser are specialised in a specific sector of the labour market. Therefore, you should choose your a-kasse with care.

At MA we specialise in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, IT, communications, health sciences, psychology and educational theory (pedagogics). If you are in any of these fields, you have come to the right place. Our 86.000 members include recent graduates, experienced career veterans, and everything in between. And the profiles of our career counsellors reflect that.

You can expect our counsellors to:

  • guide you through the maze of dagpenge regulation, so you always get the financial aid you are entitled to
  • provide you with the necessary career guidance, to quickly help you find the right job

While you are a student, any a-kasse membership is free. And after graduation the academic a-kasser cost nearly the same – the difference amounts to one café latte per month (and even less after tax deductions ). So, you should choose the a-kasse that best knows you and your academic field – it will pay off in the end!
